There are 115 standard and superior guest rooms spread out in the delightful grounds of the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. Superior accommodation comprises Suites, Studio Suites and Cottages. The Suites have a twin-bedded room, with fireplace, one sitting room, a fully stocked mini-bar, private veranda overlooking the river and Mount Kenya, and a large bathroom with sunken bath.

Heated Swimming Pool – There is a large outdoor heated swimming pool, manned by a pool attendant from 7:00 to 6:00 p.m. The surrounds of the pool are an ideal venue for cocktail parties for 15 to 500 persons.

Rose Gardens – Pay a visit to the Club’s beautiful rose gardens.

Animal Orphanage – The animal orphanage managed by the neighbouring ranch and the William Holden Foundation can be visited from a special entrance in the Club grounds.

Local Excursions – Guided game walks in the Sanctuary are scheduled daily at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Clients are escorted by a naturalist, which makes for a very interesting two-hour walk, as the expert is a mine of information about the animals.

 

 

Accommodation in Mount Kenya

This timbered tree hotel is set amid the primeval forests on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya and offers a tranquil retreat with sweeping views across the tree-canopy. The open-air viewing-deck looks down on to the hotel’s own water hole and salt-lick, which attract numerous herds of elephant and buffalo. Activities include guided walks through the forest, trout fishing in the clear mountain streams and trips to the high mountain moorlands.

Mount Kenya – which reaches 5,199 metres – is Kenya’s highest mountain, a magnet for climbers and one of the world’s highest National Parks. As an extinct volcano it has a unique landscape of protected ancient forests (fast disappearing in other areas) and is also a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site with diverse plant and animal life.

Mountain Lodge is owned and run by the high-quality Serena group of hotels. It has been carefully designed to complement its natural environment and make the most of its wonderful setting with the use of timber and elevated wooden decks, giving guests unsurpassed views of the area.

A timbered drawbridge leads from the forest and up to the lodge. Inside, there are log panelled walls, timbered game-viewing decks and winding stairs leading to a selection of snugly comfortable, cabin-styled rooms.

A tunnel leads to a photo-hide, which offers spectacular viewing and photographic opportunities just metres away from the wildlife at the water hole.

Serena Mountain Lodge Room Types

Serena Mountain Lodge has 41 non-smoking guest rooms, each constructed in a timber cabin style. Each room has an ensuite bathroom and a private balcony overlooking the water hole. The décor, which echoes the Kikuyu culture, features hand-woven wall hangings, soft lighting and cosily-warm soft furnishings. Rooms feature WiFi connectivity, complimentary mineral water, toiletries, bathrobe and slippers, hair dryer, room service, valet service and laundry service. There is a safe facility at reception.

Facilities & Activities at Serena Mountain Lodge

The attractive gallery dining room is at tree-top level affording wonderful views over the canopy and beyond. There is also a bar with central fireplace and viewing deck.

Activities available from the lodge include guided forest walks to learn about the plant and animal life in the surrounding area, trout fishing in the mountain streams, a tree-planting programme and guided climbs of Mount Kenya. Bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners can be arranged at nearby scenic locations.

There is also a library, gift shop and business centre and beauty treatments such as massages, facials, manicures and pedicures are available.

Food and Drinks at Serena Mountain Lodge

The central dining room is raised to tree level offering long views over the forest canopy. All meals are served on a buffet basis and showcase both local and international cuisine. The panelled bar is decorated with scenes from Kikuyu life and features a central fireplace and access to the viewing platform over the waterhole.

Breakfast and lunch are presented in table d’hôte where hot meals are served from the kitchen and feature a wide range of international choices. In typical safari style, we offer a ‘full English Breakfast’ as well as European options while our lunch menus will typically include meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian options.

The table d’hôte dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee. Vegetarian options are always available. The majority of the meat and dairy products, as well as the fruits and vegetables, are sourced from the communities that surround the mountain.

The wine list offers a broad selection of old- and new-world wines, and local and imported beers and spirits. There is a wide range of soft drinks including an array of freshly-made local fruit juices. Only the finest Kenyan coffee and tea is served and there is a range of fruit and herbal infusions.

Porini Rhino Camp Ol Pejeta Location

Ol Pejeta conservancy has a large area of over 60,000 acres reserved exclusively for 4×4 vehicles and this is where our Porini Rhino Camp is located. The conservancy has over 10000 large mammals and is the only park where the big 5 and chimpanzees can be seen. It is the largest sanctuary in East Africa for the endangered Black Rhino and is also a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. There are southern white rhinos, about 80 endangered black rhinos and in a special sanctuary there are three of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino

Porini Rhino Camp Facilities

  • Solar energy powers the lights in the tent and throughout the camp.
  • There are no electrical outlets in the guest tents and all battery charging is done in the manager`s office.
  • The tents do not require mosquito nets around the beds as the tents are insect proof with screen windows and a zipped up door.
  • Insect repellant towelettes are provided in the tents Fire and safety equipment are strategically placed in the camp.

NUMBER OF ROOMS: Porini Rhino Camp has just seven guest tents.

ROOM DÉCOR: The tents are very spacious and have private verandas along the length of the tent, providing a secluded and private ‘space’ for you to relax and enjoy the beauty of this African wilderness. The seven tents are comfortable with thick, soft rugs laid on the vinyl floors. These are traditionally themed safari canvas tents large, bright (three of the four walls are entirely made of mosquito screen) and comfortably functional – perfect for people who want a tented camp experience without frills. The beds are comfortable and wrapped in cosy blankets and soft towels.

ROOM AMENITIES: Each tent contains a double /twin and single bed with bedside tables, torch, gas and kerosene lanterns, wardrobe for hanging your clothes, luggage rack, en-suite toilet with bucket walk-in shower and wash basin sink, writing desk with lamp, carpets of sheep skin rugs on the floor LED lighting, Chairs and table on veranda for relaxing. Hot water bottles in each bed keep you warm on chilly nights.

Foods & Drinks options

Porini Rhino Camp offers fully-inclusive meal plan that caters for all meals, drinks (gin & tonics, wine, beer, sodas and mineral water). Ice cold drinks are available upon request. Premium drinks are also available at an additional cost. The meals are crafted to complement the authenticity of the safari experience. All meals are served on a set menu basis, with warming hearty breakfast in the morning, light invigorating lunches and dinners served in the mess tent, at least during one of your two or more night stay here you will enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic setting depending on the weather. Family Tents have enough space for your family to share special moments together. The very spacious family tent has two bedrooms and a living room. The bedrooms are equipped with a double bed and two single beds. There is also a desk and shelves. The spacious tent is also ideal for longterm stays.

Family Chalets

Two family chalets are available at the Rhino Watch Safari Lodge. These large houses, which are ideal for families, have a living and sleeping area with 30 square meters, as well as another room with 20 square meters. Both rooms have their own bathroom. In the large room, which is intended for adults, there is a king-size bed and a spacious sofa bed. The smaller room has a bunk bed and can be converted to two single beds if required. The houses have been deliberately designed to be large in order to offer visitors who want to stay longer a tasteful and comfortable place to stay.

Reminiscent of the biblical ark, the building has numerous decks, balconies, and lounges from which guests can watch the continuous comings and goings of animals around the waterhole. The floodlight also allows viewing throughout the night. Guests can observe the behaviors and individual personalities of the elephants, rhinoceroses, buffalo, monkeys, leopards, bushbucks, bongos, and plethora of birds that frequent the site. The rare vantage point, especially in the bunker on the ground floor, provides excellent photo opportunities. So that you don’t miss any animal sightings, the night guard will buzz your room when special animals come to the waterhole

The Ark Kenya Room Types

The hotel provides 60 guestrooms with single, twin, double, and triple-bedded cabins that are comfortably furnished.

All “cabins” have an en-suite shower and bathroom. Accommodation in The Ark is in the form of cabins that are self-contained with a shower and toilet. The rooms are on three levels – Deck A, Deck B and Deck C.

Deck  C  is the main deck where all the main lodge facilities are located, including the restaurant, cloakrooms and bar. There is also access for wheel chairs, for those who require it.

From the safety and comfort of all the four decks, one can watch the wild animals visiting the water hole in front of The Ark.

Food and Drinks in The Ark Kenya

The restaurant offers excellent cuisine for dinner and breakfast, either as a buffet or set menu, depending on the number of guests. Lunch is served at the Aberdare Country Club. However, on advance request the same can be organized at The Ark.

The food is very fresh with organic vegetables and spices picked from the Aberdare Country Club gardens accompanied by fruit are brought in daily from the village. The Chef is always on hand to cater for special dietary requirements. A collection of fine wines is available from The Ark cellar.

Wildlife at The Ark  Kenya

Visitors can observe different animals, such as elephants, leopards, buffalo, rhinos in the park. These animals come to the waterhole and can be seen from the comfort and secure decks.

Elephants dominantly rule the waterholes and salt licks. There are other animals that come to drink water such as hyenas, which have to contend with elephants chasing them off at great speed. Some animals such as leopards are shy. However, the leopards are often seen in the morning and evening during safari drives.

While on game drives or walks through the forest, you may chance upon various monkeys, such as the Colobus and Vervet monkeys, for whom the Aberdare National Park is an ideal habitat. Many birds are also found here. In the forest there are many animals like the Red Duiker, Suni, Bushbuck, elephants, buffaloes, leopards etc. The moorland thickets are the home of Bush Duicker and Black-fronted Duicker and also the Black Rhino.

Safari Drive at The Ark Kenya

Half or full day safari drive to The Salient and The Moorlands in Aberdare National Park. Search the forest for a plethora of animal activity, and capture that perfect photograph to take back home.

Game drives to the Solio Sanctuary, a private game reserve that extends between the spurs of Aberdare Mountains and Mt. Kenya are possible too. This 25,000 hectare reserve became famous because of its unique success in the rearing of the White and Black Rhino. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes and zebras can also be spotted in large numbers.

Guided Bush / Nature Walk at The Ark Kenya

Enjoy various guided bush walks through the well-developed trails in the park. Our guides have in-depth knowledge of the local flora, fauna and wildlife. The KWS rangers will be happy to answer any questions you have about animals or the history of the area. It is mandatory to have a ranger for the walks in the park.

Bird Watching at The Ark Kenya

Bird life found in the forest is abundant and varied with over 250 species of bird recorded. The most conspicuous group is the Sunbird, with four abundant species: Tacazze Sunbird, Golden-winged Sunbird, the emerald-green Malachite Sunbird and the tiny, double collared Sunbird.

Birds can be watched whilst on a safari drive or on an organized nature walk.

The Walkers offered a bottle of champagne to whoever suggested the best name for the new hotel. It went to Grace Barry, a saw-miller who suggested Outspan meaning the place where the traveller outspan (un-harnesses) his weary oxen at the end of the day’s journey. Outspan was officially opened to the public on New Year’s Day 1928 with ten rooms.
Lord Baden-Powell, the Scouts Movement founder, and a friend of Walker spent the last years of his life at the Paxtu’s Cottage within the Outspan compound.
Today, Outspan with 45 unique rooms on 20 acres of splendid gardens and superior food and service, is an ideal destination for leisure and business.

PAXTU MUSEUM

Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouts Movement was proclaimed the Chief Scout of the World in 1920 and in his 2nd visit to Kenya in 1935 fell in love once again with the wonderful views over the plains to the bold snow peaks of Mount Kenya to such an extent that when ordered by the doctor in England to rest in the winter of 1937, it was Outspan that he chose to come to.

Lord Baden-Powell was a friend of Sherbrooke Walker (Outspan founder and owner until 1961) whom he appointed as his first Scout Commissioner and Private Secretary. Lord Baden-Powell spent the last years of his life (1938 to 1941) at the Outspan in a special cottage called Paxtu (named from after his English Pax Hill’s home with Swahili for replacing. Lord Baden-Powell died on 8th January 1941 and is buried in Nyeri town. The Paxtu cottage, now Paxtu Museum and a protected monument (gazette 2001), is dedicated to his life and the scout movement and continuous to be visited annually by hundreds of scouts and guides from all over the world. Outspan Resident guests have free access to Paxtu Musuem while walk-in guests pay a fee.

GUIDED NATURE WALK At OUTSPAN HOTEL NYERI

The Outspan Hotel Nyeri is famous for its expansive grounds, beautiful gardens and over 300 bird species available around the hotel’s airspace. There are many fun walking activities in Nyeri you can indulge in while here as you savour the beauty of the environment in Nyeri. On your guided nature walk along river Chania, our naturalist will help you identify the unique flora & fauna and a waterfall gorge where the river squeezes between black rocks.

The highlight of the guided walk is the massive five hundred-year-old Mugumo tree, sacred to the Kikuyu people. Our naturalist will give you a few details about the tree and how much it meant to the people especially in the old days.

CHANIA WALKING, JOGGING AND BIKING TRAIL AT OUTSPAN HOTEL NYERI

The 1.5Km Chania natural Trail that winds its way around the hotel’s inner perimeter is popular for walking, jogging and biking. The Trail use is free to Outspan resident guests and available to other guests for a fee.

ABERDARES GAME DRIVE

The 2hr game drive taken in the afternoon is a perfect time to enjoy the beautiful sunset at the Aberdares while watching all the animals found in the Aberdare National Park. It is also a chance to see the beautiful indigenous flora and fauna that is synonymous with the Aberdares.

The game drive is taken using powerful jeeps with experienced drivers who double up as wonderful tour guides who are experts in helping the visitors spot wild animals even from their hideouts. Their expertise will leave you cherishing your time on the game drives for a long time to come.

During the game drive, you are poised to see four of the big five including the Black Rhino, the Leopard, Elephant, and Buffalo. You can also view the Spotted Hyena, the Sykes, Colobus and Black-faced Vervet monkeys. Lastly, one can view very rare animal species including the Bongo Antelope and the Giant Forest Hog.

Last but not least, as you complete the Game Drive, The Outspan serves refreshing cocktails and dry bitings as you bask in the glory of the spectacular Aberdare sunset.

SOLIO GAME DRIVE

The Solio Ranch Game Drive is your chance to view the black and white rhinos at the Solio Game Reserve which is a privately-owned wildlife conservancy geared toward rhino conservation. The 17500-acre reserve, 22 km north of Nyeri town plays a major part in the protection and breeding of black rhinos in Kenya. It is recognised as one of the most successful private rhino breeding reserves in Kenya.

Besides the black and white rhino, our visitors can view some unique wildlife species including the Buffalo, Zebra, Giraffe, Eland, Oryx, Impala, Waterbuck, Thompson’s Gazelle and Warthog. The Salient zone is indeed spectacular since all these wild animals co-exist together.

This game drive is taken together with our experienced drivers who double up as tour guides in powerful four-wheel drive vehicles which enable our visitors to explore the magnificent Solio Ranch.
